CONCEPT
OF THE QUOTE
As
we always explain to potential new clients, a quote, unless it is
attached to an actual vehicle and discloses a VIN (vehicle identification
number), means nothing to you as a car buyer. Generally speaking,
if you get a quote from a dealer, unless it is in writing with a VIN,
that number is likely to be a lowball figure. The lowball is a strategy
employed by dealers: it is an unrealistic price, the purpose of which
is to stop you in your tracks as you shop for a new car. If a dealer
senses that you are not going to consummate a deal on the spot, he
wants you to leave his showroom believing that you can purchase or
lease the vehicle from him for a price that is lower than he or she
- or, more importantly, any other dealer - would, in fact, be willing
to deliver. You now have this figure in your head, and you discover
that, indeed, no one is willing to touch the lowball quote. That is
because the lowball is nothing more than a ploy; you go back to the
dealer who lowballed you, and before you know it he is apologizing
for making a mistake when he gave you that quote. But the trick worked:
you’re back at his dealership!
